20-year-old put an ‘American Idol’ judge ‘out of a job’ singing his song

Sunday’s latest episode of “American Idol” proved Lionel Richie might be out of a job, according to judges.

Olivia Soli, a student from Los Angeles, California, auditioned with “Hello” by Richie.

“Now I’m nervous,” Richie said.

The 20-year-old gave her own rendition of the song, complete with powerful high notes and piano playing. She earned a standing ovation from judges, especially by Richie.

“When people say ‘I’m going to sing your song’ please don’t sing it like us. Own it. Take it and turn it into your song. You did it to perfection,” he praised. “I know who you are as an artist. Yes, it’s my song. Yes, I wrote it. Yes, I sang it but it’s your song. Best so far in this audition.”

“You put Lionel Richie out of a job,” judge Katy Perry said to Soli. “You came for him.”

“You were coming after me,” Richie joked.

Since Soli nailed the audition, Perry warned that the judges will push her harder than other contestants in the competition “because we know that there’s a ruby in there,” Perry said, referencing Soli’s red hair color.

Soli was given a yes by all three judges, earning a gold ticket to Hollywood.

Season 21 of “American Idol” airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
