China steps up hacking against US civilian infrastructure

China has increased its hacking of key US civilian infrastructure over the past 12 months, targeting utilities and transportation systems.

American security officials claim that there has been a rise in activity in the past year, as the hackers associated with the Chinese military bury spyware in the computer systems of more than two dozen bodies described as critical.

The attacks, which have the potential to cause chaos should the hackers choose to disrupt services, have hit water providers in Hawaii, a gas pipeline and the operator of the Texas power grid, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the story.
