College men’s basketball roundup: Hokies breeze past Wofford

Lynn Kidd scored 20 points Sunday as Virginia Tech breezed past Wofford 98-76 at Cassell Coliseum.

Hokies coach Mike Young guided Wofford before coming to Blacksburg. Corey Tripp led the Southern Conference’s Terriers with 14 points.

Lindenwood 71, William & Mary 60: Led by Darius Beane’s 25 points, the Lions (3-3) from Saint Charles, Missouri, beat the Tribe (2-4) at the Air Force Classic in Colorado.

Chase Lowe led W&M with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. William & Mary also got 16 points from Gabe Dorsey and 11 from Noah Collier.

The Tribe trailed by as many as 16 in the opening half, but fought back to cut the deficit to 56-52 on a Trey Moss 3-pointer with 5:47 remaining. Lindenwood hit a season-high 10 3-pointers, including one from Jeremiah Talton with about 4:30 remaining to stretch to the lead to nine.

Liberty 71, Vermont 61: Sophomore Zach Cleveland scored 21 points as the Flames (5-0) defeated the Catamounts (4-1) to win the eight-team Myrtle Beach Invitational in South Carolina.

Liberty’s Kyle Rode was tabbed the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by junior guard Brody Peebles.

Georgetown 88, American 83, OT: Hampton Roads standout Jayden Epps sank two late 3-pointers to force overtime, finishing with 31 points to help the Hoyas win an all-Washington showdown.

The Eagles (2-3) led 75-70 before an Epps 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go. After AU’s Colin Smalls went 1 of 2 at the free-throw line, Epps, a former King’s Fork High star, sank another long-distance shot to pull the Hoyas even at 76.

Matt Rogers led the Eagles with 17 points.

Ferrum 95, Regent 45: The Royals (0-5) lost in southwest Virginia despite Marion Brown’s 15 points. Jikari Johnson led the Panthers with 16.

ACC men

No. 12 Miami 91, Kansas State 83: Nijel Pack scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half against his former school as Miami won the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas championship in Nassau.

Norchad Omier scored 23 for the Hurricanes (5-0), who are essentially assured of tying a school record by being in the AP Top 25 for the 17th consecutive week when the new poll comes out Monday. Cam Carter scored 28 points and Arthur Kaluma had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Kansas State (3-2).

No. 19 Texas 81, Louisville 80: Max Abmas hit a fallaway jumper at the buzzer for the Longhorns in the Empire Classic in New York.

In a game with 21 lead changes and 14 ties, Abmas gave the Longhorns (4-0) the dramatic win off a successful inbounds play.

Former Virginia Cavalier Kadin Shedrick scored a career-high 27 points for Texas. Abmas added 14.

Clemson 85, Boise State 68: Syracuse transfer Joe Girard scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half for the host Tigers (4-0) against the Broncos (2-1).

LSU 86, Wake Forest 80, OT: Will Baker had 23 points, LSU scored the last five points of overtime, and the Tigers (3-2) took fifth place in the Charleston Classic against the Demon Deacons (2-3). Hunter Sallis made four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for Wake.

Andrew Carr’s jumper got Wake within 81-80 with a minute to go but Jalen Reed scored in the paint and LSU added three free throws to close out the win.

No. 5 Connecticut 77, Indiana 57: Tristen Newton scored 23 points and the Huskies pulled away in the second half for a victory at the Empire Classic in New York. Cam Spencer added 18 for the defending national champions.
