Houston vs Memphis Basketball Prediction, Odds & Picks

Published

on

Houston and Memphis have already locked up first and second in the American Athletic Conference, but we should still expect an entertaining matchup between the top-ranked Cougars and the Tigers to close out the regular season at FedExForum (12:00 pm ET, CBS).

The Cougars (28-2, 16-1 American) are certain to be a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, but another Quad 1 win can only be good for their resume.

As for the Tigers (23-7, 13-4 American), a trip to the Big Dance is already a certainty, but a win over the nation’s #1 team could help them secure a higher seed.

Who will take the win? Read on for our Houston vs Memphis basketball prediction, as well as our picks for the matchup between the Cougars and Tigers.

Will Hardaway Remain Unbeaten at Home Against Houston?

With the Cougars off to the Big 12 next season, this will be the last regular season meeting between Houston and Memphis in the AAC.

In addition to trying to boost their position in the March Madness bracket, Penny Hardaway will be looking for his fourth straight home win over the Cougars in his tenure at Memphis.

In their regular season finale last season, Memphis upset #14 Houston 75-61, adding to home wins over the Cougars in 2018 (91-85) and 2020 (60-59).

The Cougars have certainly been a force in the American this season, with 11 of their 16 conference wins coming by double digits.

This season, Memphis is 7-1 SU at home in conference play, losing only to Tulane in overtime. But they haven’t come through for spread bettors, going just 1-6-1 ATS in their home conference games to date.

That spread record doesn’t exactly make for encouraging reading with Houston on the horizon. But this is very much a winnable game for the Tigers, who have scored 75+ points six times at home in conference play.

It won’t be an easy task for Memphis to reach that mark against Houston, who has allowed 75 or more points only once this season, in an 83-77 home win over SMU on January 11.

That said, even scoring 70 points could do the trick for the Tigers. They have scored 70+ points in 22 of 30 games this season, including six times in their eight home games in AAC action. In those six games, Memphis has won five times, losing only the aforementioned game against Tulane.

Houston vs Memphis Prediction and Picks

Cougars vs Tigers Prediction: Memphis to win

Cougars vs Tigers Pick: Memphis to cover (Best Value: +6 @ Caesars Sportsbook)

I’m rolling with the upset in this one, but even if they don’t pull it off, the Tigers will at least make things interesting.

The Cougars have certainly shown they are by far the best team in the AAC, but they are 1-4-0 ATS in their last five games and have covered in only one of their last four road trips in conference play.
