Actor and TV personality Mario Lopez is joining the family: the Great American Family. Lopez has signed a multi-picture, multi-year deal with Great America Media, with a focus on showcasing diverse talent in front of the camera, EW can exclusively reveal.
The former Saved by the Bell heartthrob is set to play a “major part” in Great American Christmas this October, according to the network, which is also home to fellow former ’90s TV teen dreams Danica McKellar and Candace Cameron Bure. Lopez’s first project will be a holiday film in which he’ll star alongside wife and Broadway star Courtney Lopez.
“Throughout my career, I’ve aimed to create a body of work that appeals to diverse audiences and, above all, brings joy to people,” Lopez said in a statement. “Joining Great American Media is immensely fulfilling. I look forward to creating uplifting, inclusive, and diverse content, viewed through a positive lens for all ages.”
The father of three continued: “At this stage in my life, family is the most important thing to me. Being able to share family-friendly stories representing diverse voices is a true blessing.”
Great American Christmas has faced some humbug controversy in recent years over comments by Bure, who signed on as the Great American Family channel’s chief content officer in 2022. When asked if her Great American Christmas movies would feature same-sex couples, Bure declined, saying that the network would “keep traditional marriage at the core.”
Great American Family CEO Bill Abbott later claimed Bure’s comments don’t necessarily reflect those of the company, but was vague over whether same-sex couples would be welcomed into the Great American Family in the future.
