Shumate, Thall and Hauser Earn MAC Women’s Basketball Postseason Honors – Kent State Golden Flashes

CLEVELAND — Kent State’s Katie Shumate, Lindsey Thall and Corynne Hauser were among the student-athletes recognized, as the Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC Teams and specialty award selections for the 2022-23 women’s basketball season. All of the awards were voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches, with coaches not being able to vote for their own student-athletes.
Shumate led the way with an All-MAC Third Team nod, the third all-conference honor of her career. Thall earned an All-MAC Honorable Mention spot for the second time. Hauser was named to the five-member All-Freshman Team.
The versatile Shumate led the Golden Flashes in scoring (12.0 ppg), rebounding (6.6 rpg) and steals (32) while ranking second in blocks (19). The senior enters the postseason playing some of her best ball as a collegian, averaging 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while leading Kent State to a 5-1 record over the last six contests. Shumate became the 24th member of the Flashes’ 1,000-point club at Arkansas on Nov. 17 and sits sixth all-time in three-point field goals (125).
Thall made history during Saturday’s regular season finale as the first MAC women’s basketball player ever with career totals of 1,500 points, 250 three-point field goals and 200 blocked shots, and is the only active NCAA Division I student-athlete with those totals. She needs nine points to break into the top-10 on Kent State’s all-time scoring list. Thall averaged 11.3 points and 3.4 rebounds while rejecting a team-high 28 shots during her fifth season in a Flashes uniform.
Hauser ranked fifth in the conference with a 1.73 assist-to-turnover ratio and led all freshmen with 3.1 assists per game. She helped Kent State record its third victory against a Power-Five opponent in a 12-month span by making the game-winning layup with 4.3 seconds remaining at Oklahoma State on Nov. 20. Hauser averages 9.6 points per game and is tied for second on the team in steals (21).
Kent State begins the quest for its first MAC Tournament championship since 2002 on Wednesday afternoon against Northern Illinois. Tip from Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland is expected around 1:30 p.m.
